FLOMATON, AL - The Flomaton Medical Center and D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital announce the upcoming retirement of Dr. John Vanlandingham by the end of 2017. Dr. Vanlandingham is a primary care physician practicing at the Flomaton Medical Center and has been practicing medicine in the Flomaton community since 1974.
"Dr. Van has been a wonderful physician for the Flomaton Community," said Michael Myrick, Clinic Manager for the Flomaton Medical Center. "We are very appreciative of Dr. Van's many years of service to the community and at the same time excited for him and wish him nothing but the best in retirement."
Dr. Vanlandingham attended medical school at the University of Michigan and received his medical degree in 1970. Upon his graduation from the School of Medicine at the University of Michigan, Dr. Vanlandingham completed his internship at St. Joseph Hospital in Michigan.
After completing his training at St. Joseph Hospital, Dr. Vanlandingham came to Flomaton to start what has turned out to be a very long and successful medical practice. As some may remember, he originally came to Flomaton to help treat patients on a temporary basis while a local physician was unavailable. That short visit transitioned into a long term commitment of medical care to the Flomaton community.
During his career, he has served on the medical staff for Abernathy Hospital, in Flomaton and D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital, in Brewton. He has also served in many community appointments on various boards and committees. In 2005, D. W. McMillan Memorial Hospital and Dr. Vanlandingham partnered to establish a Rural Health Clinic at the Flomaton Medical Center. Without the foundation of Dr. Vanlandingham's 30 plus year private practice, the Flomaton Medical Center would not be what it is today for the Flomaton community.
"We are very fortunate to have a wonderful physician like Dr. John Vanlandingham in our community for so many years," Chris Griffin, administrator at D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital said. "He will be missed as Dr. Vanlandingham has been an icon of healthcare for the Flomaton community and has unselfishly served his community since 1974."
Planning has started for a community based retirement celebration for Dr. Vanlandingham, to give the community an opportunity to honor and thank Dr. Vanlandingham for his long tenure of service to the Flomaton Community. Efforts are also underway to find a new physician to join the medical staff at the Flomaton Medical Center, whose staff currently consists of Dr. Anna Fountain, Nurse Practitioner JB Golden and Physician's Assistant Cristi Guthrie, in addition to Dr. Vanlandingham.
